We have been brought in to help several customers where they have been struggling with disconnected systems and business processes.

Their experience is similar, although what each business does has varied significantly. As their business has grown, the original IT systems procured to be the backbone to run their business when things were more straightforward and simpler, are no longer proving to be fit for purpose. A plethora of workarounds, spreadsheets and inefficient working practices have grown up to deal with specific issues as they have arisen, or as new capabilities have been required.

In many cases newly available systems applications have taken a manager’s fancy or suppliers have wooed them into buying a solution they think will solve specific challenges. Often the solution has been an expensive sledgehammer to crack a nut! CRM solutions are a good example, as the business needs to deal with ever increasing complexity in marketing and sales across new channels. These new systems are often poorly implemented and do not integrate well with existing systems and processes. They become an expensive bolt-on and people lack the training and skills to benefit from the functionality they were promised.

These disconnected systems also present a massive security challenge. Protecting data is business critical and keeping data safe from cyber-attack is increasingly a major worry for operations leaders and COO’s. Yet the prevailing behaviour in operations is often fire-fighting the problems as they arise rather than looking forward and making the strategic decisions that are really needed.

Given this complex backcloth, Augere has helped many of our customers by selecting and implementing new Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems. These systems provide the backbone for successful businesses, enabling departments to work together efficiently and consistently and providing the tools to streamline operations. They can also provide the foundation for successful digital transformation initiatives too.

Whether you’re scaling your business or managing many customers and partners, with multiple locations and sales channels, an ERP system provides a business management platform that can automate your company’s processes and let you access information from across departments and locations to improve efficiency and make faster, more profitable decisions.

ERP solutions are increasingly catering for small-to-medium sized businesses and with improved cloud technologies, ERP solutions are becoming more affordable and secure given the increasing levels of cyber risk associated with on-premise data storage.

There are many benefits to be gained by investing in ERP systems – some of the key advantages are set out in the graphic below.

But there are also pitfalls to avoid in implementing or changing ERP systems.

This is where external support can be massively helpful. People get used to their existing working practices and are reluctant to change them. Afterall, they probably developed the bespoke spreadsheet that everyone else depends on! People feel safe in what is familiar, however inefficient this may be, and they are comfortable working in their own siloed teams with little understanding of the impacts they may be unwittingly having on the value chain. Information and KPI’s aren’t accurate, and people fear performance measurement and detailed management information as this might expose underperforming teams and individuals.

The value of our role for customers, has not only been in the project management of the many activities required to drive the ERP implementation through, across disparate and sometimes competing business stakeholders, but also in navigating through the underlying business change.

The changes required, in behaviours, roles, organisation structures, acquiring new skills and letting go of the past are often underestimated at the outset by the leaders of the business. Getting these things right and navigating through the complexity of the change needs objective challenge to encourage new ways of working to adopt the new ERP capabilities and adapt to the future ways of working. Doing this can unleash massive benefits for people, teams and for business value.
